Getting to Know Diane Rotter

Diane shared this story of how they came to Aiken and why she enjoys Newcomers:

I was born in Chicago, Illinois and spent a good portion of my life there. When it came to retirement my husband Joel and I wanted to escape the snow and ice so began looking for a more moderate climate.

We started in Williamsburg, VA and worked our way to FL. On a visit to NC, we met a couple from our home town and they were set to buy property and asked our opinion. I said it was too remote from medical and the basics like grocery shopping. That made them rethink their decision. Back in IL a few months later I ran into them again and asked if they found a place and they said yes, Aiken, SC. Of course I said why Aiken and they said the magic word.....tennis!  My husband could find golf courses anywhere but tennis programs as extensive as those in Aiken are hard to come by. The tennis opportunities in the CSRA are better than I could have hoped for.

We moved to Aiken in 2009 and reside in The Reserve at Woodside. Living in a gated community I have enjoyed Newcomers because it gives me the opportunity to meet people in other parts of town I may not have met otherwise. I have especially liked the Couples Bridge Group and the Wine and Dine.

Kay shared these aspects of herself to help us learn a bit more about her:

I have been a member of Aiken Newcomers for 7 or so years. Time flies, so I can’t totally remember when I actually joined.  But this club has been a major outlet from working all the time.  Meeting new people with the Club has been wonderful!

I was born in Northern Michigan.  I did live most of my life in Northern Minnesota.  Upon retirement from my business, I moved to Florida and resumed a career in Human Resources/Payroll and Benefits with a major market research firm. However, after ten years working in Florida, I decided to plan a retirement once again.  I talked my husband, Steve, into looking for a property which we could adapt into a B&B/fine dining establishment.  Via Internet searches, he found the area of Aiken that offered a few interesting possibilities.  So, the rest is history.  We bought the property which is now the General Elliott Inn 12 years ago and have enjoyed working and living in the Inn.

I love to cook and entertain so the fit was perfect for this new business.  Travel is something I do enjoy, but having a lovely home is most important to me.  My husband enjoys the same things.

My bucket list was to take a trip to Italy which we did three years ago.  I have been blessed with a wonderful family, good health and a caring husband.  I guess I can’t ask for more!
