Getting to Know Sally Alexander

Sally her "story" with ANC:

I grew up in New Richmond, WI, a small town just over the border from the Twin Cities of Minneapolis/St. Paul.  I graduated from Hamline University in St. Paul and majored in English and Secondary Education.  I married a handsome man from Green Bay, WI and have been a devout Packer fan ever since.  I have always felt that my blood is “green”.

I moved with my husband and our two boys from Minneapolis, to Atlanta, back to Minneapolis and then to Columbus and Cincinnati, OH, all in support of his work.  After my husband retired, we split our time between Door County, WI and Fort Myers, FL.  We moved to Aiken in April of 2017 in order to simplify our lives and get down to one place.  I believe we are called “halfbacks” having made the “J” turn.  We live in The Village at Woodside and will NOT move again.  We love it here, having become familiar with Aiken through longtime friends.

I joined ANC in June, having seen the ad in the Aiken paper.  I was looking for a newcomers' club because of my wonderful experiences in Columbus and Cincinnati.  I made many friends through the clubs' activities and served as president in both cities.  I plan on being quite involved in ANC after I pull my house together and complete some projects that are on my bucket list.

I have rented a small booth in Aiken Antiques & Uniques for the purpose of purging myself of much-loved items that I no longer can use and my children don’t want.  Now the “bug” has bitten me as a vendor, and I find myself going to auctions and tag sales.  The ANC group that I am involved in at present is Antiques, Art and History.  I enjoy the monthly meetings, the excellent programs and the variety of activities offered.   ANC members have been so friendly and welcoming!  The recent New Member Tea in January was a lovely and very well planned and executed event.

My other interests include writing (a journal and a cookbook), painting (acrylics at the moment), photography, furniture restoration, gardening, golf and hiking and generally being in the great “Outdoors”.  South Carolina is a beautiful and historical place.  Aiken is just the kind of town I love and the people are genuinely friendly.   I am very happy to be here!

Diane shared this story of how they came to Aiken and why she enjoys Newcomers:

I was born in Chicago, Illinois and spent a good portion of my life there. When it came to retirement my husband Joel and I wanted to escape the snow and ice so began looking for a more moderate climate.

We started in Williamsburg, VA and worked our way to FL. On a visit to NC, we met a couple from our home town and they were set to buy property and asked our opinion. I said it was too remote from medical and the basics like grocery shopping. That made them rethink their decision. Back in IL a few months later I ran into them again and asked if they found a place and they said yes, Aiken, SC. Of course I said why Aiken and they said the magic word.....tennis!  My husband could find golf courses anywhere but tennis programs as extensive as those in Aiken are hard to come by. The tennis opportunities in the CSRA are better than I could have hoped for.

We moved to Aiken in 2009 and reside in The Reserve at Woodside. Living in a gated community I have enjoyed Newcomers because it gives me the opportunity to meet people in other parts of town I may not have met otherwise. I have especially liked the Couples Bridge Group and the Wine and Dine.
